WordPress Tutorial For Internet Marketers
One of the ways to spend more time doing High Yield Internet Marketing activities is to systemize.
And one of the tools many of us use is WordPress. It makes sense to have a default “WordPress Installation Checklist” that you or your team can refer to each and every time you put up a new site. This way nothing is forgotten, you always have the links to download the correct plugins and there’s little ambiguity and therefore less room for mistakes.
I use Basecamp to organize progects, and within Basecamp there is the functionality to create “To-Do List Templates” that can be used over and over again.
Today I’m sharing my personal WordPress installation checklist – this is geared towards internet marketers building content-type sites. We go through each and every step on this list when installing a new site. It’ll produce a wordpress site that’s got it going on in terms on on-page optimization and is ready to grow. Add content and you’re up and running.

Although you’re welcome to borrow this checklist from me, many folks have individual setup/plugin preferences (such as Platinum SEO vs. All In One SEO Pack). I encourage you to personalize your own WordPress tutorial checklist to reflect your favorites!
Sometimes when we think we’re missing information, we’re really just missing a plan. This framework should get you headed in the right direction.
Let me know in the comments how you’d personalize this checklist!

Super list, most of it i use too!! Idea with wonder wheel categories great!!
Here is an awesome tip:
There is a commercial plugin called “backupbuddy” which allows to backup/clone a fully functional and working site. So..basically you can make one site with all plugins/themes pre-configured etc….and then clone the whole site to a new one.
I like the Wonderwheel thing. I will be trying this out!
This was really helpful. I printable checklist would have been a nice added touch.
(About my profile badge: Gilad Shalit has been held captive since June 25, 2006 by Hamas in Gaza since Israel gave Gaza to the Arabs. He is being held without the benefit of any Geneva Convention ‘benefits’, incommunicado, and with little hope of his safe return.)
Wow, this is a nice list. I’ll be going through my blogs this evening.
You rock!
Nice checklist, Michelle! I have one of my own, but I think I’m going to add a couple of items from yours to improve it.
Great article with some new ideas I haven’t thought of. Just a question, what do you think is the maximum for the amount of plugins that should be installed to keep WP running smoothly? I also use W3 Total Cache. It’s used by big sites like Mashable. I also use WP Optimizer which I’ve become sort of addicted to.
Thanks for this article, i’ll use it in my website: http://www.eingles.com.br
Great content-rich, actionable article, Michele.
I’ll be adding a couple of plugins that I had forgotten about to my local small business marketing website: http://www.localseoatlanta.com and also at my new site that informs local small business owners of a new way to help their “cash & credit challenged” customers purchase their goods/services (http://www.beethebuzzoftown.com).
Excellent article.
Michelle – thank you so much for sharing this – these “best practices” while basic, are so infrequently shared and in many cases are the difference between making it and not. Really appreciate you taking the time and sharing this, it really ads value!
Thank you that was a really really cool post. No body would tel me that tahnk you so much I have been working with wordpress for a week and it is the perfect time for this info.
@Tracy & others re: comment moderation & no trackbacks – this list is for content-type sites, on which I’m not particularly interested in community building. On sites where you want to build community, by all means, adjust the setting to fit your project!
Thanks Michele! While I had most of that covered I found a couple I am going to certainly investigate further! One quick question, since I use the 30DC method of obtaining pingback backlinks for my own site I wonder why you do not allow pingbacks or trackbacks to your WP sites?
SEO Smart Links sounds interesting… I would love more info on what it actually achieves. And since I own the Max Banner Ads Pro at your urging I am going to check out their Psychic plugin… sounds interesting too. Thanks for the suggestions AND the list.
Hey Michele. Glad to have you back. I am currently

Thank you for this great checklist http://www.refurbishedlaptopsale.net
Hi Michele,
Thanks for the tutorial. I will compare it to my WP site. I know I don’t have all those plug-in and am always looking for some good ones to add. http://kristysaffiliateadventure.com/
Thank you for this very helpful article. I’m saving this check-list for future reference. I thought I had all the plugins I needed for seo, however you have shared some more that I’m going to try on my site: http://howtoplayit.org
You should check out WP Twin. You set up a “basic” WP installation, clone it, and deploy it to other WP sites that you set up. Dead-simple and takes far less time than the manual way. In fact, from registering a domain name all the way to fully-functioning WP site (with all plugins and config done) takes less than 5 minutes.
I just wrote up a wp install checklist while having breakfast and then I checked my email and came across this. It was kind of weird. But good weird. You have some stuff on her I had forgotten about, so thanks.
A checklist like this is very important. I create $99 websites using wordpress so I have to efficient with a plan and a template if I expect to make any money and get projects completed on time. Excellent post!
Heeey Michelle thanks so much for your expertise in SEO. I’m going to post here so that those on my profile will have access. KEEP SMILING…with unconditional love.
We won’t need Global translator if we don’t have AdSense and sell products to english speaking market.
am always ready to learn more and refresh the mind – great site with valuable information thks Michelle.
I agree with Mathew Lewis about Pingbacks, and with Mike Wilson about security. I would also add WordPress Database Backup plugin.
I’d definitely add the Pretty Links plugin for masking and tracking any affiliate links you might use in future promotional posts
Great checklist, Michelle – thanks so much for sharing!
I had a wordpress site hosted with a company and when I changed hosting, it was a nightmare. I still don’t have my site up on my new host. I went through sql php, uploading this, downloading that, I’ve had it. WordPress setup is easy when you know how, but no one knows how to explain it.
Great Article! It almost mirrors my checklist when I install WP! Instead of SEO-Booster light, I would try LJ Longtail SEO
I use SuperPopUp for e-mail newsletters and awesome updates I must share.
FeedWordpress to share articles across many blogs
Although!
I would strongly stay away from SI-Captcha! There was a Botnet attack on one of my sites this week (Wed Night –Thursday Morning) specifically targeting a weakness with SI-Captcha. According to my host, the attack was 1000′s hits a minute from 1000′s of IPs targeting the SI-CAPTCHA default directory with sending malicious code to break the CAPTCHA plug. Also, (my host) they said that If I had it installed my site would have been flooded with 100,000′s of spam messages from this Botnet in minutes. They (my host) caught it, and were able to slow it down and keep my site up for all my normal visitors (with some fancy my host is awesome IP wizardry), but because the Botnet was so distributed, it was hard to stop completely, eventually I think the owner of the Botnet figured my site was a waste to attack, they stopped.
Thank you for sharing! I have so many different plugins that it slows down the site.
I will borrow, Thanks!
Great checklist, thanks.
Thanks Michelle. Appreciate the checklist. Hope your still not bruised on your leg from your last big project
Thanks Michelle, this is a great help
You can see from http://www.StephenJBarrett.com that I’m just starting out and really do need – and appreciate – your help.
Best regards

Great checklist, Michelle, but I’d add the PushPress and Pingler plugins to the list!
Hey Michelle~ I actually googled your name a few times over the past few months because you just kind of disappeared and I was worried about you. (Yeah, I know, I’m a goof.) It’s good to have you back sharing and starting conversations.
I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it yet, but a google-compliant Privacy Policy is a must-have for the checklist if you’re running adsense. I know you know that, of course, but someone just starting out might not know there are plugins to accomplish this.
Hi Michelle,
thanks for sharing your checklist. Interesting to see which plugins you use
Here is a link to an expanded ping list, many with an international focus:
Blog And Ping — Expanded List Of Ping Services>
Thanks Michelle for the check list. I do use word press. I just don’t know how to enter h1 an h2 tags on my web site. I will use your check list it is very easy to use thanks again
Cheers,
Constance
Once you have your wp installation set up the way you want you can use a program like WP Twin to clone your site so you can cut the installation of subsequent sites down to less than 5 mins… just need to load analytics code and keywords. It’s a great time saver.
Nice checklist. Will have to check out WP Twin mentioned by Steve Cockrane. I install all plugins at once by 1. copying the plugins folder from another blog, 2. deleting the plugins folder from the new blog, 3. pasting the copied plugins folder where the other one was just deleted. Akismet has to be dealt with separately, but this method sure saves time.
Cool plugins: Raw HTML allows you to use html on your blog – incl h1 and h2 tags. Quick Adsense plugin allows you to set up ads anywhere you want, not just adsense.
Thanks Michelle for the check list! Very useful information I already shared it with my friends .
Can’t wait to install all the plugins and see my site growing! Thanks again!
nice!thanks!

Wounderful content and very useful. you sunarise it all, Thank you
http://www.hiwaar.org/vb/forum.php
Thanks Michele, this is a great help…something that marketers don’t usually share.
Thanks for sharing! Very useful indeed. I’ll make sure you to use this check-list next time I get started with a web site.
Very good checklist. I use most of the plugins myself.
Very useful checklist! Thanks Michele for sharing. Will definitely update mine to the light of yours.
One thing caught my attention though…why should we not allow pingbacks and trackbacks?
Thanks Michelle. Note: Linking out doesn’t really hurt you, you know. On the contrary; Linking to WordPress.org pages from a post about WordPress is the right thing to do.
So why would you ruin some of the user experience by forcing users to copy ‘n pasting the URL’s instead of just clicking links?
Hello, this is very useful for me, I need to say thank you, I use wordpress for my educational site, http://www.arabic-alphabet.org/ and as soon as I applied some of your advice, I felt a big improvement. Thanks!
Love the check list! I would suggest a note not to use ADMIN for username or password. Be creative and include upper and lower case with a special character for password.
@John Chartrand – Take a look at the Backup Buddy Plugin from iThemes. It among other things, it is very useful for migrating a site from one host company to another. It will back up the both database and the file structure, so the restore onto the new site is quite simple. I use it to migrate my client sites from my staging area to thier hosting account.
Disclaimer – I do not work for iThemes, but I have used their products for a couple of years.
@Michelle, what plug-in allows users to post with their facebook login??
Thanks Michelle.
Ive jusT recently met with a bunch of London Internet Marketers and it seems we are all making lists in January…
My lists include different plugins based on whether it is an affiLiate site / semi-autoblog/ or local business CMS style site.
Appreciate your list and tip on Basecamp todo lists
I personally Just change the blogrollm inks to relevant but Non competition sites like associations etc
Include wp-timemachine as it zips the whole site backup to my DROPBOX
@jeff Baer – wordbooker worksma charm for Facebook comments.
@Louis Slabbert (and anyone else who has an opinion) facebook comments or wordbooker?
It would have been great if you could hyperlink the links to plugins. Great list!
Thanks for this extremely informative article.

I Use WP Robot for auto blog posting ( using keywords) its kick ass and beats everything in sight. This can make 500 per day if you crank it up and back dates them. You can built a whole new site with 2000 post overnight. Cost about $160 and well worth it.
I notice that you have an opt in to Receive Notice Of My New Posts!. How would I go about putting that on my website. Is it through a plugin?
This checklist will help me to navigate my way through the maze of creating my wordpress blogs http://www.healthyhairproject.com. Thanks so much for simplfying the process!
Valuable post, Michelle.
As some others have said, once you have a fresh
Wordpress installed with ALL your Tweaks and Plugins,
and everything activated, including your paid themes
and paid plugins…
And ALL your advertising IDs, affiliate link info, and on
and on…
Then… you clone every thing down to the last pixel
with WP Twin, found at…
http://VeryEasy.com/wp-twin/
And I mean EVERYTHING is cloned.
Pages, posts, comments, usernames, passwords,
images, videos, databases, themes, and ALL the plugins
you have.
and… the plugins are already activated when you install
your awesome template on a new domain.
Except for the ones you had de-activated.
They remain de-activated on the new domain.
Like I said, it is an EXACT copy of your entire WP blog template.
And it makes Exact backup copies of any of your full blown WP blogs.
Even if it has 1,000 pages of content.
And it is super-fast.
Best software I bought in the last 12 months.
Get it at the link above.
You’ll be saying OMG when you see how much it does for you !
’nuff said…

Wow, Thanks Michelle, this is very helpful!
I will be integrating it into our existing document, this has some we don’t use and I think are great.

Unless I missed it you didn’t mention a way to backup. I use the plugin DB manager and then backups can be scheduled and sent via email since I like to keep a backup away from the website.
It’s also important to test it to do a restore (which I have done successfully) just to make sure it works okay on your site before you actually need to do a restore
I actually use most of what you mentioned plus a few others but there are a few I will check out so thanks for the list.

Karen

Lovely,to the point,no here and there, and folks still says women are talkative??
Michelle you rock my world baby…
thanks
can’t believe you’re giving this information away for free Michelle… @CarrieTaylor check this out!
Good stuff but you are a typical Internet Marketer, too much assuming. You say to change the default category in posts, but you do not say how. It is not obvious in wordpress. These things are the single biggest problems that IM tutors have. They always miss stuff out and the newbie has to stuff around for hours trying to figure this stuff out. However despite all this you are one generous lady.
ALSO: What is a wonder wheel search?
And for best Security in your WordPress you need http://www.sitesecuritymonitor.com/secure-wordpress-plugin
Goog info http://prestidigitu.com
Magic Checklist Michelle, lots of value here, why would some people see a checklist as a detailed tutorial, we could write a chapter on each of the items you list, maybe there’s a product in that
There’s no way you can add the Dagon Design URL to your Google Webmaster account. Might want to correct that.
Thanks so much Michelle for this post. I have always loved WordPress, and have used some of the plugins that you recommend. This post has been very helpful, and I have already included a few of the plugins that are new to me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Gareth – http://eZenith.com/
Michelle, you are wonderful, sharing person!
@Dave – I wrote, “URL & XML Sitemap added to my Google Webmaster Tools account”
Thank You so much for the great information Michelle!
Great article shortlisting the To Dos for a somewhat typical WP installation. Although it would seem mixed bag for newbies, it’s all about ‘customization’
Thanks for info Michelle.
Fanasic list – thanks, guys! I’ll use it as a template in creating my own standard list. I’ve got one now…but it’s all in my head :-/ Thanks again! Solid post!
looks good… need to include in list the steps for setting up RSS feed subscription and/or email subscription capabilities
Thanks Michelle! This is very useful and much simplified… great stuff from u – as usual
I am curious why you do not allow pingbacks & trackbacks?
I would recommend WP SEO from Yoast instead of All-in-One. I have used both and WP SEO does considerably more.
Also W3 Total Cache is faster than Super Cache for me.
You have several other things here that I will be trying. Thanks!
Great post.
Mike

Hey Michelle, again, awesome post and thanks for checklist! Just wondering if you or anyone has had problems with the site running slow b/c of all these plugins (plus more specific to each site). If so, would love a solution or feedback about that. I was going to add all these to a client’s site but he already has a ton of plugins. Thanks so much in advance!
Hello Michelle,
What this plugin is for – Install & activate To Title Case?
Regards,
Igor.
One of my favorite utility plugins is Broken Link Checker – it automatically checks all of you links and notifys you when one is not working.
Yeah, I am the 3000th person that liked your FB page…. Now, I going to read the page.
Awesome- I have a ton of basecamp task templates, and my wordpress one isn’t nearly as good as this- I’ll be integrating it straight away.
Nicola Grace – Public Page Awesome post thanks. Now Google+1 is up and running I like the Tweet Like Plusone plugin as it has the facebook, twitter, linkedin and Google+1 neccesities.
I’m quite new to WordPress, so forgive a naive question. The Permalink/custom setting to /%category%/%postname%/ seems to break published pages.
Thanks a lot for this list. It helps immensely to have a checklist. Though I do have a blog checklist having a specific WP checklist is even better.
Thanks for sharing your WordPress checklist Michelle. One of the joys of WordPress is the flexibility it offers but having a checklist such as this is very useful for anyone just starting out.
Great Post, Michelle.
I wanted to just let you know that the User sitemap link doesn’t find anything.
(User sitemap built w/ http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sitemap-generator/. Link to the sitemap at the bottom of the sidebar.)
Any other suggestions for this type of plugin?
I think these huge numbers of plugins will slow down your site:) And Total Cache won’t help much. Maybe with your own server…
Are these plugins not conflicting all together?
awesome information.. michelle
Thank you for sharing! I would ad this one ”Bullet Proof Security”!
Top article, I have set up wordpress but clearly there is more to it. Cheers I beteer get to work on it.
